Lieutenant general Tarun Kumar Aich, PVSM, AVSM is a serving general officer of the Indian Army. He currently serves as the Deputy Chief of the Army Staff (Strategy).[2][3] He previously held the appointment of Director General of Military Intelligence,[4] prior to that he was General Officer Commanding Trishakti Corps (XXXIII Corps).[5] He earlier served as the Director General of National Cadet Corps.[6][7]

Early Life and Education

The general officer is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla where he graduated with the Degree of Bachelor of Arts and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. He is also an alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and Army War College, Mhow. He had undergone the Command and General Staff Course (CGSC) at Hamburg, Germany. He is a Postgraduate and holds an M Phil in Defence and Strategic Studies from the Madras University.[8]

Career

He was commissioned into 16th battalion of the Madras Regiment (TRAVANCORE) in June 1986 from the Indian Military Academy.[9] In a distinguished career spanning over 37 years he has served across vivid terrains and has undertaken many staff and instructional appointments. The general has commanded his battalion in the Siachen Glacier and in the intense counter terrorism environment of the Valley Sector in Kashmir. The general officer has held various staff and instructional appointments  to include Instructor Class ‘C’ and ‘B’ in the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. He has held the appointment of a Brigade Major of a Brigade in Counter Insurgency Operations and General Staff Officer-1 in the Military Intelligence Directorate. He has tenanted the appointment of Colonel (General Staff) of an Offensive Formation in the Plains Sector, Colonel General Staff (Planning) of a command headquarters, Deputy Commander of a brigade (new raising) in the Eastern Theatre, Deputy Director General Canteen Services, Brigadier General Staff of the Indian Military Academy, Commandant of the High Altitude Warfare School at Gulmarg. He has also commanded 12 Reorganized Army Plains Infantry Division (RAPID) in the desert sector.[8]

On being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant general, he took over as the 33rd Director General of National Cadet Corps on 1 January 2021.[7][10][11][12] As DG NCC, he emphasised on compulsory NCC training in schools and colleges. [13][14] During his itinerary to the Northeastern states to take stock of the ongoing drive for expansion plan of the NCC in the region, he visited & met Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi.[15] On Oct 5, 2021 Lt gen Aich relinquished the charge of National Cadet Corps to Lt Gen Gurbirpal Singh.[16]

On October 22, 2021 Lieutenant general Aich took over as the General Officer Commanding XXXIII Corps succeeding Lieutenant general Ajai Kumar Singh.[17][18] As GOC of Trishakti Corps, he took numerous initiatives such as; On Dec 11, 2021, he set up a 400 litres of oxygen per minute oxygen generation plant, at the base hospital in Bengdubi near Bagdogra in Siliguri[19] On May 16, 2022 Lt Gen Tarun Kumar Aich, the GOC of Trishakti Corps, and Avinash Khare, the VC of Sikkim University signed the MoU for the Tibetology cadre course[20]. The Eastern Command Tibetology cadre course (ECTCC) is a six-week programme conducted at Gangtok under the guidance of the Black Cat division of the Indian Army and gives an insight into various aspects of Tibet such as its history, religion, language, culture, politics, demography and geography. Later on Aug 26, 2022, under the purview of the Indian Army’s Eastern Command General Officer Commanding 33 corps Lt General Tarun Kumar Aich launched the unique civil-military cooperation activities - Eastern Command Trans Theatre Adventure Activities (ECTTAA) 2022, which start from Jongsong Peak in the western extremities to Jelep La in the easternmost part, all along the northern Indo-China borders.[21]

On Sept 20, 2022, he inaugurated The Avalanche Monitoring Radar (TAMR) operational in North Sikkim. It is first of its kind radar in India located at an altitude of 15,000 feet & capable of detecting avalanches within three seconds of their trigger by using a series of short microwave pulses scattered at the target. The radar was installed jointly by the Indian Army and Defence Geoinformatics and Research Establishment (DGRE).[22] DGRE rendered the radar operational in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)

After relinquishing the command of Trishakti Corps,[23] he moved to the Army headquarters and assumed the appointment of Director General Military Intelligence.[4] After a short stint as DGMI, on 14 March 2023, Lieutenant general TK Aich assumed the appointment of Deputy Chief of the Army Staff (Strategy) succeeding Lieutenant General M. V. Suchindra Kumar upon the latter's elevation as the Vice Chief of Army Staff.[3]

Awards and decorations

He has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 2024[24] and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2021.[25]The general officer has been awarded the Chief of Army Staff’s Commendation thrice.[8]
