Tan Kim Wang (Chinese: 邓金煌 / 鄧金煌; roman: Tan Kim Wang; pinyin: Deng Jinhuang; born 16 May 1966) is a Malaysian actor best known for his debut role in the film Abang Adik (2023),[1] which brought him to got nominated as Best New Performer in the 60th Golden Horse Awards[2] and nominated as Best Supporting Actor in the Malaysia Golden Global Awards 2024.

Early Life

Wang was born on May 16, 1966, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Born as the youngest child in a family of six children, with an 11-year age difference from the fifth child, he grew up with his nephews and nieces, who were the same age as him. After graduated from Malaysian Institute of Arts he worked in the advertising industry and he also has various working experience such as food and beverage industry, event decorator, and baking household.

As a graduates of Institute of Arts, Wang has interests to various arts including the stage performing arts and was playing in various stage performances such as P&C (1997),[3] Tauke (1998),[4] Tauke (1999),[5] Ping An Coffee Shop (1999),[6] Cross The Line (1999), Love Stories (2000), Empat Sekawan (2003), Juego de Damas (2003), Stop 2.0 (2004).[7]

Early Career

To make a living, Wang has devoted himself to various fields involving design, including advertising, window displays, wedding banquets, corporate dinners, and racing events.[1] It was his roommate, Charles Jong, a theatre director, who introduced him to stage plays when the original actor had to go to the UK for further studies.[1]

He played a transgender character named Chanel in his first stage plays "P&C" and it was attracted a large number of audiences, and invitations came to him one after another, which started his journey as a stage actor in 1997.[1] In 1998 and 1999, he played a transgender role again in Tauke.[1] He also performed in the local Cantonese stage play "Love Stories" in 2000.[1]

Film Career

More than 20 years he was shelving acting skills when Jin Ong, director of Abang Adik (2023), in 2022 called and inviting him to play the role of Sister Money, and this allowed Wang to return to the spotlight.[1]

Abang Adik (2023) which nominated for 7 awards at the 60th Golden Horse Awards and won 9 international film festival awards, has become Wang comeback moment because he nominated as Best New Performer in the 60th Golden Horse Awards and nominated as Best Supporting Actor in the Malaysia Golden Global Awards 2024 for his role in the film. Abang Adik (2023) also grossed over NT$98 million ($3.1 million) during its theatrical run in the Taiwanese box office, receiving 388 thousand admissions. In Hong Kong, the film grossed HK$2.5 million ($319,800) in the first two weeks, breaking box office records as the highest grossing Malaysian movie in the region. In Malaysia, the film earned RM5.2 million ($1.12 million) during its first 24 days.

Recently Wang appeared in Sam Quah new film A Place Called Silence (2024) and the film is second place for the highest summer collection of 2024 in China so far, raking in 1.29 billion yuan (RM806 million).[8]
