Tamna (탐라어) was a language spoken in Jeju Island, South Korea.

Classification edit

Since the language is unattested, many scholars in Korea assume that the language spoken was a Koreanic language or a variation of Old Korean[citation needed]

However, Alexander Vovin has identified Japonic placenames in the region, and compared the name 'Tamna' with Japonic tani mura 'valley settlement' or tami mura 'people's settlement'. He also believed Tamna was closely related to the Old Japanese dialects.
