SysMod (Systems Modeling) is an annual meeting dedicated to the computational modeling of biological systems. It is part of the Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology (ISMB) conference [1][2] and the European Conference on Computational Biology (ECCB)[3], leading international bioinformatics and computational biology events. SysMod focuses on mechanistic modeling and causal understanding of biological functions at all scales, from viruses and individual cells and tissues up to integrated host-microbita simulations. It aims to channel the development of systems biology by bringing together scientists from diverse fields, including wet-lab and dry-lab researchers, and fostering their exchange.[4] SysMod usually comprises a one-day meeting at varying places internationally, with keynote talks, lightning speeches, and poster awards.

History

SysMod was initiated in 2015 by Nicolas Le Novère and co-founded by Andreas Dräger and Jonathan Karr. The first SysMod meeting was held in 2016 at Disney World, Orlando, FL, in conjunction with the Network Biology (NetBio) workshop[7][8]. It featured keynote speakers Vassily Hatzimanikatis, Nathan Price, and Ioannis Xenarios[9]. Following the successful launch, the SysMod coordinator team expanded to include Tomáš Helikar, Julio Saez-Rodriguez, and Laurence Calzone. The next meeting took place in Prague in 2017[10][11]. When Nicolas Le Novère stepped down, A. Dräger became the de facto chairman. The meeting was held in Chicago, IL, and the coordinators expanded further with Claudine Chaouiya, Jan Hasenauer, María Rodríguez Martínez, Marc Birtwistle, and Juilee Thakar joining the team. The subsequent meeting was in Basel. Anna Niarakis and Matteo Barberis joined the coordinators in 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the meetings were held virtually instead of in Montreal (2020) and Lyon (2021).[12] After the meeting in Madison, WI, in 2022 A. Dräger stepped down as chairman.[13] SysMod restructured its governance, introducing a team of volunteers (Nantia Leonidou and Giovanni Guglielmi)[14], a scientific advisory board, and six community-elected coordinators[15]. The current coordinators are Shaimaa Bakr, Matteo Barberis, Chiara Damiani, Reihaneh Mostolizadeh, Bhanwar Lal Puniya, and Meghna Verma, with Bhanwar Lal Puniya as their elected chairman[16]. SysMod now operates with a rotation of coordinators and fixed terms for the coordinators and the scientific advisory board, ensuring dynamic and updated leadership[17].
