Sundial (stylized in all lowercase as sundial) is an American indie-pop band founded in 2016 by couple Dorothy Chan and Jisu Kim. They are most notable for their 2016 hit "your text", which has (as of December 2023) accumulated over 27 million plays on Spotify.[1] [2] Their debut EP the roaring twenties was released on September 15, 2023 in partnership with Hundred Days Records.[3]

Early life edit

Chan grew up in Hong Kong, where she attended Canadian International School. As a child, she participated in piano competitions and began taking singing lessons in ninth grade. From a young age, she described herself as wanting to move to America and attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.[2]

Kim was born in South Korea and moved to Atlanta, Georgia, with his family at age one. He started playing piano at age five and later learned to play cello and guitar. He started producing music during his freetime when he was a teenger.[2]

Career edit

The pair first met in 2015 while attending Berklee College of Music. They began making music together in 2016, releasing a track on SoundCloud before formally founding Sundial soon after.[4] Their debut single "your scarf" was released on Spotify and SoundCloud in May 2016.[5][6] A second single, "your text", was released that same year in October. The song gained attention via social media usage and became one of their most well-known songs. These and other releases were later combined and re-released as the EP yours in late 2016.

After graduating from Berklee in 2018, the couple moved to Los Angeles to work for Flighthouse Media, and released several tracks under the company. In late 2020 they moved to Atlanta to live with Kim's family. In 2021 they signed with Hundred Days Records and published a new single "24", which has accumulated over 18 million plays and is their second most played song on Spotify (as of December 2023). It was later included in their debut EP the roaring twenties, released September 15, 2023.[2][7]

Since the band's founding in 2016, Sundial has held various live performances. They opened for NIKI during parts of her Nicole album tour in 2022.[8] They have also performed at events such as at the Chinatown International District Block Party in Seattle, Washington in 2023.[4] The band headlined their first solo concerts in November and December of 2023, performing in New York City and Los Angeles.[citation needed]

Style and influences edit

In a 2023 interview, Kim stated, "we don’t exactly have a genre as of right now. We don’t want to confine ourselves to a genre"[4], but that he considers bubblegum pop to be the closest match to Sundial's musical style. Vanyaland, a Massachusetts music publication, describes Sundial's music as "dreamlike" due to its use of sampling and inclusion of ambient noises from the environment in their songs, such as the sound of passing cars, streaming water, and rustling paper.[9]

Sundial's sound has been compared to artists including Tori Kelly, Taylor Swift, and Tennyson.[9] In 2023, Kim stated that his personal music production style is inspired from a mix of indie and emo music, along with dubstep artists such as Skrillex.[4]

Chan and Kim have stated that the lyrics of their songs draw heavily from their experiences as young adults living in America. Songs such as "24" and "grass is greener" relate to Chan and Kim's feelings following their move from Los Angeles to Atlanta in 2020. Other songs, such as "american dream", discuss their experiences as Asians and immigrants in the United States.[2]
