Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre @IIUM (SASMEC @IIUM), formerly known as IIUM Medical Centre (IIUMMC), is the fourth Malaysian university teaching hospital resides in the district of Kuantan, Pahang. Aligned with the role as the teaching hospital[1] of International Islamic University Malaysia, it is the first teaching hospital certified for Shariah-based Quality Management System MS 1900:2014.[2]

SASMEC @IIUM has officially began its clinical operation on 20 July 2016[3] in a 11-storey building equipped with wards, clinics, operation theatres, labor suites and administrative offices. The facility is able to accommodate 300 inpatient beds,

Currently, Prof. Dato' Dr. Mohamed Saufi Awang is the Hospital Director and he supervised a total of 1735 staff of the institution including 188 specialists on board.

History

In 2010, the development of the IIUM Medical Centre (IIUMMC) was announced during the budget speech by Malaysia's 6th Prime Minister, Dato' Sri Mohd. Najib Tun Abdul Razak. To materialise the vision, federal and state agencies were expedited, and by early 2011, an agreement was finalised between Ahmad Zaki Resources Berhad, the Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Health, and IIUM.

IIUMMC has been constructed on 27.8 acres of land through the Private Funding Initiative under a 25-year concession agreement. It features 300 inpatient beds and is supported by over 133 specialists then. The centre also includes an undergraduate and postgraduate teaching hospital and a tertiary referral centre.

On 12 December 2012, the Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony was graced by His Royal Highness, Sultan Ahmad Shah Al-Musta'in Billah ibni Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mu'azzam Shah of Pahang, the first Constitutional Head of IIUM. This ceremony marked the commencement of the IIUM Medical Centre's construction. In 2016, the centre was handed over to IIUM and it fully operated on 20 July 2016.

On 18 March 2020, the IIUM Medical Centre was officially renamed to Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre @IIUM, commonly known as SASMEC @IIUM, by Her Majesty, Seri Paduka Baginda, the Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tunku Hajah Azizah Maimunah Iskandariah binti Almarhum Al-Mutawakkil Alallah Sultan Iskandar Al-Haj, who is also the current Constitutional Head of IIUM.[4]
