He was appointed in April 2022 after serving as the former managing director was sacked and he assumed the position of acting managing director during the restructuring of the leadership of the organization by the federal government which was also when the electric power sector reform act was enacted.[1] [2] [3]

His academic background edit

His career in transmission company of nigeria edit

Before his became appointed the managing director of Nigeria's electricity transmission company, he started his career in the power sector in the defunct National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) in 1996 as Manager, Electrical, and rose through the ranks to become the senior manager, and subsequently the principal manager, Projects in the nepa that was later renamed defunct Power Holding Company (PHCN) and then was in charge of supervising various project sites handled by the organization all across the country. Overcoming electricity infrastructure vandalism and other problems edit

He has led the company in the advocacy and fight against vandalism and destruction of electricity transmission infrastructure in Nigeria. The destruction of electricity transmission lines, towers and other facilities contributes majorly in slowing down the attainment of electricity sufficiency in the country.[10] [11] Under his leadership the company has implemented several projects that were targeted at addressing the country's present power wheeling capacity, including increasing transmission capacity, digitalization of its substations and installation of new power transformers that has been attributed to have contributed in solving the country's ailing electricity condition.[12] [13]

Reforms and milestone achievements at transmission company of Nigeria edit

His flagship initiatives of what was called Nigeria Electricity Grid Maintenance, Expansion and Rehabilitation Programme (NEGMERP) embarked on the execution of capital and reinforcement projects across the transmission regions in the country resulting in significant milestones achieved within the period. Among some of the achievements of the company attributed to his efforts includes; delivery of Osogbo Region brand new 300/375MVA 330/132/33kV power transformer in Osogbo Transmission Substation in Osun state in October 2022, installation of brand new 375MVA 330/132/33kV, and 100/125MVA 132/33kV power transformers delivered to Ganmo Transmission Substation, brand new 100/125MVA 132/33kV transformer at the Ilorin Transmission Substation, under Ganmo Sub-region, installed 132kV Bus Isolators on 6OMVA Transformer T2 at the Isolo 132/33kV Transmission Substation, Lagos State, energizing a new 150MVA 330/132/33kV Interbus Transformer (IBTR) at Delta IV Transmission Substation, Ughelli, Delta state, energized a brand new 60MVA 132/33kV Transformer at the Itire 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Lagos State and construction of two number 2x60MVA transmission substations project, successfully installed the new 30MVA 132/33kV Bichi Transmission Substation in Kano state on Friday 20th May, 2022; Installed and commissioned a new 33kV feeder in Bauchi 132/33kV Transmission Substation and a 132kV transmission line project in Ekiti State. Under his leadership, those known as TCN operators deployed a stop-gap network automation solution at the National Control Centre (NCC) Osogbo, as an alternative to full-scale scada/ems application. This was achieved by utilizing the Internet of things (IoT) solution, and Virtual Private Network (VPN), using Internet Service Providers (ISPs). The company equally commenced the use of what is known as the NSONG PORTAL which is now the only source of exchange of operational data, load forecast and reports, as directed by Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, the regulatory body of the power sector in the country.[14]

Sustainable growth in Nigeria edit

Abdulaziz has contributed in government policy design and implementation for the energy sector through the presidential power initiative (PPI) on Nigeria’s power network. The initiative which sought to ensure consolidation and optimization of both transmission and distribution infrastructure, as well as to ease the processes at interfaces which improves the free flow of electricity from the generators to load centers. Based on this development, the Nigerian government and Siemens, representing the government of Germany, under the PPI developed the Nigeria Electrification Roadmap, which is structured in three phases. The first phase focuses on essential and quick-win measures to increase the system end-to-end operational capacity to 7 GW. Phase 2 targets the remaining network bottlenecks to enable full use of the existing generation and last-target distribution capacities, bringing the system’s operational capacity to 11 GW. Phase 3 is focused on developing the system up to 25 GW in the long term. TCN stands to benefit from the PPI through some identified quick-win projects to address TCN/DisCo 132/33-kV interface bottlenecks. It is to be noted that TCN’s wheeling capacity is 8,100 MW today. Addressing the interface challenges will facilitate the free flow of electricity to enable attainment of capacity increases, not just for TCN but also for DisCos and GenCos distribution and generation companies.[15]

Awards edit

Engr Abdulaziz was honored with the Best Environmental Leadership Award 2023 Environment Reporters Association of Nigeria (ERAN) in recognition of his leadership in ensuring TCN's adherence to environmental safety and management in a work place.[16] [17] [18]
