Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty (Chinese: 唐朝詭事錄; pinyin: Táng Cháo Guǐ Shì Lù) is a 2022 Chinese television series adapted from the eponymous novel Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty (唐朝诡事录) by Wei Fenghua (魏风华).

Produced by iQIYI Sparkling Media Group and co-produced by GHY Culture & Media, the series is directed by Bai Shan, starring Yang Xuwen and Yang Zhigang, with Gao Siwen, Chen Chuang, Anson Shi, and Sun Xuening in supporting roles. Special guest appearances include Wang Jinsong, Gallen Lo, Lina Yue, Zhang Zijian, Liu Zhiyang, Jungle Lin, and Fan Ming. The series premiered exclusively on iQIYI on September 27, 2022, and began broadcasting on Dragon TV on November 16, 2023.

The first season premiered on iQIYI on September 27, 2022[1][2], and on Dragon TV starting November 16, 2022. The second season, Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty: Journey to the West, completed filming in September 2023[3] and premiered on iQIYI on July 18, 2024[4]. Writer Wei Fenghua has confirmed that a third season is in the works, themed around Chang'an[5].

Plot Synopsis

Adapted from the eponymous novel by Wei Fenghua, the series narrates a series of bizarre and mysterious events occurring during the prosperous Tang Dynasty. The stories include "Red Tea of Chang'an," "Strange Tales of Gantang Post," "Stone Bridge Drawing," "Yellow Plum Killings," "Hall of All Beings," "God of the River Turtle," "Face Flowers," and "Skyscraper."[6] The main characters, Lu Lingfeng (played by Yang Xuwen), a commander of the Golden Shield Guards, and Su Wuming (played by Yang Zhigang), a disciple of Di Renjie, join forces to solve strange cases and protect the people, taking on the mission to save the state from peril.

The second season consists of eight story units: "Demon Transformation," "The Coroner's Death," "Mo's Inn in the Snowstorm," "Thousand Crossings," "Heavenly Rhinoceros," "Cloud Peak Intoxication," "Letter from the Immortal Pavilion," and "The Benefactor."[5]
