Sonia Odisho (Syriac: ܣܘܼܢܝܐ ܥܒܕܝܫܘܿܥ; born 1984) is an Assyrian singer-songwriter from Zakho, Iraq. She is currently based in Sydney, Australia.

Biography edit

Odisho was born in the village of Berseveh near Zakho, Iraq in 1984 as the daughter of Odisho Moshe, who is another singer-songwriter. From a young age, Odisho fell in love with music after getting the opportunity to sing with her father on stage. Leaving Iraq to avoid persecution, she stayed in Turkey before immigrating to Sweden, where a large portion of the Assyrian diaspora reside. After her marriage, she left for Australia.[1]

Odisho's first feature was in 2006, when she sang on a song for her father's album, titled Bayanneh. In 2009, she released her first album, O Yala d Bayane, which began her full-time music career. Odisho has since become one of the most well-known Assyrian celebrities today, with continuous performances at weddings, celebrations, and other festivities to commemorate Assyrian culture and history. Odisho hopes to produce songs that help Assyrians preserve the Syriac language from extinction.[2]
