Social Career (Chinese: 社職) is a non-profit organisation established in 2015. It is a technology-based charity registered in Hong Kong under section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance (File no:91/15011). The organisation provides an online platform for non-governmental organisations, volunteers and event participants to find opportunities and match with each other. Local non-profit organisations and qualified social enterprises can use the service for free. The platform now partners with more than 1,500 NGOs and universities, including the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the University of Hong Kong, and Lingnan University as cooperative institutional partners, and offers more than 1,000 social services.

Social Career is a member of the Hong Kong chapter of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN Hong Kong) [1] and funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust[2].

Mission edit

Social Career wishes to educate the general public in volunteerism, use the power of community to create sustainable social impact and break the barriers standing in the way of social good. By utilising innovative technology, a platform was built to help NGOs and organisations acquire volunteers, promote activities, and impact the general public to volunteer and participate in social causes and service activities.[3]

History edit

2016-2017 Social Career was officially launched in January 2017. An online volunteer platform was developed, and a corresponding application was released for Android and iOS users. Over 1,000 volunteers were inspired and engaged in around 2,000 volunteer hours. 65 NGOs including HKFYG and Hong Chi Association (Chinese: 匡智會) came on board with Social Career. In December 2016, Social Career and its corporate partner, including Tesla, organised various events for the International Volunteer Day, aimed to promote the development of volunteer activities in Hong Kong through technology and to increase the interest and attention of Hong Kong professionals in participating in volunteer services.[2] [4] [5]
2017-2018 Social Career launched their first outdoor advertising campaign, featuring Mr. Chau Pak Ho as “volunteer leader”, increasing awareness of their cause. Additionally, Social Career organised various workshops and seminars aimed at training skill-based volunteers, including volunteer journalists, who played a vital role in creating impactful articles and generating greater exposure for NGOs. Building partnerships with corporate entities such as GOGOVAN and JOOX. Also, the growth Social Career experienced was remarkable. The number of volunteers on Social Career surged from 1,000 to nearly 18,000, expanded the number of NGOs units and social enterprises from 65 to 300, and engaged volunteers for 138,000 hours in total.[6]
2018-2019 Social Career introduced the “SC Volunteer Pledge 2018”. They set up a booth in May at Times Square, where they engaged with the general public and invited them to pledge their support for volunteer opportunities provided by Social Career. Moreover, Social Career also launched the "Let Your Love Shine" volunteer incentive program, sponsored by Philips Lighting Hong Kong. By completing 3 hours of volunteer service, the volunteers were eligible to receive a free Philips LED Desk Lamp. Also, the volunteers were encouraged to donate the lamp to a low-income family through Social Career, thereby creating a greater social impact. Last but not least, following the devastating Typhoon Mangkhut, they initiated the "Strive to Restore" volunteering program. This program aimed to engage the public in the clearance and maintenance efforts of the affected areas in Hong Kong. Enthusiastic volunteers joined forces to clean up the communities that were severely impacted.[7]
2019-2020 Social Career has established a free online platform called Social Career Giving to facilitate the community-based distribution of essential supplies, aiding NGOs in delivering anti-pandemic resources. Also, Social Career successfully launched two Volunteer Hours Crowdfunding Campaigns in 2019, collaborating with Laugh Festival HK and Sugar Please Bakery House respectively. These campaigns garnered overwhelming participation, with over 2,000 volunteers joining each event. Moreover, Social Career has organised a series of online volunteer training sessions. These sessions cater specifically to those embarking on their "second career" and cover topics such as the motivations behind volunteering, volunteer attitudes, and different types of volunteering. Additionally, Social Career has successfully launched a series of interview videos. These videos feature inspiring volunteer stories shared with the general public, aiming to create a social impact and foster reflection on the significance of volunteerism.[8]
2020-2021 Social Career have introduced various micro-volunteering opportunities that allow the public to volunteer in different ways, utilising smartphones, the internet, or assisting those in need within their community. In November, Social Career organised the 1-minute mask delivery project amidst the fourth wave of COVID-19 infections, enabling us to efficiently distribute surgical masks to those in need. Moreover, with funding support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, Social Career has expanded a volunteer platform into a comprehensive Stakeholder Relationship Management (SRM) solution that addresses and resolves specific challenges NGOs face through cutting-edge technology. Additionally, to encourage volunteer participation during the pandemic, Social Career organised a series of DIY workshops in collaboration with NGOs and private workshop owners, conducted in small groups or at home with provided materials, covered activities such as soap and lipstick making, and festive decoration designing. Through these workshops, volunteers had the opportunity to acquire new skills while contributing to the community in an enjoyable manner. Also, Social Career was the contractor for The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust's JCCC project, responsible for website maintenance, marketing, and public relations efforts. Through this online publishing platform, Social Career facilitated public access to the latest information, learning materials, and leisure content developed by NGOs and community partners. Last but not least, Social Career has successfully expanded our incentive program to recognise and encourage continuous involvement and engagement of our volunteers, supported by WeWork and Happy Retired Charity Action.[9]
