Silvester Popović (Serbian Cyrillic: Силвестер Поповић; Kovilj, then Habsburg monarchy, now Serbia, 1713 - Irig, Habsburg monarchy, now Serbia, 1767) was a Serbian hieromonk, pilgrim, icon painter and travel writer. He is best known for translating Bulgarian monk Visarion's compilation of Jerusalem "A Description of the Holy Land" from Church Slavonic to Serbian by also adding to it while in Jerusalem in 1746 his travel notes and sketches.[1]. Popovic mentioned that in Belgrade their caravan was joined by Hristofor Žefarović[2].

Biography

Silvester Popović was born in Kovilj in 1713. After graduating from the School of Theology he married and became a parish priest in the Kovilj, however, when his wife died he decided not remarry and as a widowed priest at the age of 43, he received the rank of a monk there in 1756.

He died in Irig in 1767 and was buried near the cathedral church, receiving the holy communin before dying from the local archpriest named Savatije[3]
