The Siege of Madrid occured in the spring of 1197 during the Almohad campaign against Castille in the Iberian Peninsula.[1] The city of Madrid was besieged and ravaged before being captured by the Almohad forces.[2][3]

Background

edit

After the decisive victory at Alarcos, the defeat of the Castilian forces at Alarcos opened the way for further Almohad incursions. The Almohad caliph Yaqub al-Mansur launched a campaign against the Kingdom of Castille, and targeted Madrid as part of his campaign.[4]

The siege

edit

In the spring of 1197, the Almohads returned to raid the already devastated fields of Talavera and Maqueda, before laying siege to Madrid which was then defended by Diego López de Haro.[5][6] The Almohads managed to ravage Madrid before capturing it right after.[7][8][9]

The Almohads pillaged they're way back to Cordoba, putting end to their successful campaign.
