Shibu Chacko, Esq, MBE is a prominent healthcare professional and educator known for his significant contributions to organ donation and transplantation. He has played a vital role in raising awareness and educating healthcare professionals about organ donation, particularly within Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities in the United Kingdom.

Early Life and Education

Dr. Shibu Chacko (born 25 September 1976). He began his academic journey in India, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree from Mahatma Gandhi University. He later moved to the United Kingdom, where he furthered his education, obtaining a PhD in Education from William Carey University, an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice with distinction from Canterbury Christ Church University, and various other qualifications in healthcare and education, including a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education from the University of Greenwich and a Diploma in Management from the Chartered Institute of Management.

Career

Shibu Chacko's career has been marked by his dedication to improving healthcare practices, particularly in organ donation. In 2015, he founded Donate Life UK, a volunteer-driven organisation aimed at promoting organ donation among BAME communities in the UK. Under his leadership, the organisation successfully registered over 3,000 new organ donors within its first five years.

He also collaborated with St. George’s University, London, to create the world’s first university-level educational program on organ donation and transplantation for healthcare professionals. This program has attracted over 8,500 delegates from around the world, highlighting Chacko's influence on global health education.

In 2019, Dr. Chacko was appointed as a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) by HM Queen Elizabeth II, in recognition of his services to the National Health Service (NHS) and his voluntary work in organ donation. He has also received numerous awards, including the NHS Blood and Transplant Inclusivity Champion Award in 2018 and the British Malayali Nurse of the Year Award in 2016.

Projects and Conferences

Dr. Chacko has been involved in several key projects and conferences related to organ donation. He developed a comprehensive educational program on organ donation in partnership with St. George’s University, London, and presented his work at the European Organ Donation Congress in 2016, where he discussed the impact of donor ambassadors on organ donation behaviours within BAME communities.
