Sheila Isbell is an American computer scientist and research faculty as Principal Research Scientist at Georgia Tech Research Institute. She is known for being a leader in health and family information systems for state, federal and defense organizations. Her research interests revolve around decision and information science, community health, disparate and vulnerable populations, and secure enterprise software systems. In this capacity, Sheila leads a unit of research scientists and manages a portfolio of software application programs as Chief of the Software Engineering and Analytics Division. Sheila is also known for building communities for women in tech and women of color.  With AnitaB.org, Sheila co-hosts ‘Just Ask - Community Helps’ a monthly virtual session with attendees from around the world, she is a regional community leader and led the AnitaB.org Atlanta local community for over 7 years.

Sheila Isbell is an alumnus of Clemson University and Georgia Tech. Sheila Isbell earned her Bachelor’s degree from Clemson University in computer science and her Masters from Georgia Tech in computer science with a specialization in interactive intelligence where she focused on software engineering, artificial intelligence, and educational technology.

Ms. Isbell is Co-Principal Investigator for a large and complex Army Family software modernization effort that provides insight to the population decision makers for over 30,000 service members worldwide[1] Ms. Isbell led a CDC-sponsored program that has been used over 1 million times, all over the world, for childhood vaccination scheduling. This one project was featured on Fox News and spawned the creation of a Ghanaian health worker mobile app and an adult pneumococcal app.

Awards and Recognition edit

Ms. Isbell’s research work at GTRI has produced over 105 technical reports. Ms. Isbell has delivered 29 key products in 13 projects within national and international contexts. She has presented at 12 conferences and was featured in 5 articles. In 2019, she was accepted into the Georgia Tech Leading Women program and honored as a Women Out Front[2]. In June 2020, Ms. Isbell was recognized in the 2019 GTRI Distinguished Awards Ceremony for Program Management Excellence and was selected as the 2020 GTRI Distinguished Diversity Champion. In September 2023, Ms. Isbell was awarded the Exceptional Community Leadership award from AnitaB.org[3]. Sheila gives talks and serves on panels related to leadership and data science.

Sheila is a member of Association of Computing Machinery and in 2023, Isbell was recognized as a senior member of IEEE. For 8 years, Sheila served as a Board Member and Former Vice Chair to ChildKind, Inc., a Georgia non-profit organization whose mission is to empower families who are caring for children with special healthcare and developmental needs.
