Selected. is an independent music entertainment company that acts as hybrid of a record label and music influencer on various social media platforms and music streaming services. Nowadays Selected. is considered to be one of the most reputable companies at the dance music industry[1] and is particularly dedicated to House and Deep house music. By summer 2024, the label amassed more than 4 billion streams despite having only released approximately 300 tracks until that time.
History
editSelected. was initially founded as a YouTube channel by Nick Scheerbart and Nico Pinkowski in 2013.[2] Within two years the YouTube channel attracted more than 500K followers and shaped the musical character of Selected. The name “Selected” reflects the key philosophy of the brand as it stands for “handpicked” music.
In 2015 Selected. expanded to a full scale music company with Michael Rank and Klaus Eickemeyer joining the board,[3] as a strategic step in their brand development.[2] The Selected. record label and publishing was created the same year, signing their first single release “I Know” by the British artist Ansah. The track went viral and was consequently signed by Island Records.
International club events
editIn the summer of 2015 Selected. started its 4 year club residency at the historical Kaufleuten venue in Zurich, brining together performances by renowned electronic music DJs and producers like Don Diablo, EDX, The Magician and more. Additional events followed until the Covid-19 pandemic in various cities and clubs internationally such us Ministry of Sound and Egg London in London, Amnesia in Ibiza, Club Gretchen in Berlin and others.
YouTube sessions
editAfter the international club events took off, Selected. started producing exclusive events & DJ sets in off-locations around the world [2]. The YouTube video series was branded under the name ‘Selected Sessions’ and had its first event taking place with British electronic music production duo Gorgon City behind the decks at a vehicle recycling plant in Berlin in 2018.
Additional sessions included Sonny Fodera and Mark Kinchen performing inside a metro wagon in Berlin in 2019[4] as well as the 2020 DJ set by the Grammy-winning Italian trio Meduza, in one of Iceland’s most picturesque locations,[5] the Sólheimasandur Plane Wreck. Inspired by the type of escapism craved in the midst of the global lockdowns, the latter session was produced in partnership with the Manchester-based Covert Productions and in support of Icelandair.[6]
Selected Sessions continued producing events until their latest 2024 Colombia edition with Disclosure and Salute, becoming globally known for choosing iconic locations for artists to perform at.[6]
