Scott Holt

edit

Wenston Scott “Scott” Holt (born June 26, 1966) is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter. He began his career as second guitarist for Buddy Guy, spending 10 years on the road with the GRAMMY winning legend before embarking on a solo career, releasing 8 solo records. In 2022, he became the lead singer/guitarist for the legendary British Blues/Rock band Foghat.

Career

edit

Born in Lawrenceburg, Tn. in 1966, Holt was the child of itinerant parents, living in Texas, Mississippi and Alabama before starting school at 6 years old. Holt began playing guitar when he was 19 years old. His parents encouraged music in the house and took him to his first concert in 1975, Elvis Presley.

Buddy Guy (1993, performing in Toronto, Canada)

After a fortuitous meeting with Blues Legend Buddy Guy, Holt was taken under Guy’s wing and tutored for a year before being invited to join Guy’s band. Holt joined the band in October of 1989 and spent the next 10 years on the road and traveling the world with Guy, as the second guitarist during the most successful period of Guy’s illustrious career. Over a decade-long tenure, Holt performed on Guy’s GRAMMY winning record “Slipping’ In”. Holt also performed twice on Austin City Limits, The Tonight Show (with Johnny Carson), The Tonight Show (with Jay Leno), Good Morning America, Conan Obrien, Jon Stewart and many other television appearances as well as appearing in the motion picture “Things To Do In Denver When You’re Dead” with Andy Garcia and Christopher Walken.

Traveling the world with Guy, he met, played and learned from many of his heroes, including B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, Eric Johnson, Junior Wells, Willie Dixon, Koko Taylor, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Albert Collins, and Double Trouble, as well as many others.

After leaving Guy's band in 2000, as a solo artist, Holt released 8 solo records including; “Messing With The Kid”, “Dark Of The Night”, “Angels In Exile”, "Chipped Front Tooth”, “From Lettsworth To Legend”, “Revelator”, “Kudzu” and “Golden City”. Holt toured the U.S. and Canada extensively during these years with a variety of amazing musicians.

In 2014, Holt was introduced to Foghat by a mutual friend. Roger Earl invited Holt to their Florida studio (Boogie Motel South). Along with Craig MacGregor and Bryan Bassett, they rehearsed and began writing new material. Some of the material was initially released as a 4 song EP in 2016. Additional material was released as Earl & The Agitators “Shaken & Stirred” in 2018, which debuted at #11 on the Billboard Blues chart, with Holt as vocalist, Roger Earl, Craig McGregor and Bryan Bassett. A touring band consisted of Holt, Earl, Bassett, and Rodney O’Quinn with Tony Bullard on guitar and Mark Petrocelli on percussion.

In an interview with Toddstar of 100percentrock, Scott Holt talked about the collaborative effort behind Earl & the Agitators' Shaken & Stirred album, where the band focused on experimentation. He mentioned being proud of the album's success, noting it reached number 11 on the Blues charts. Holt also shared insights on his unique tone and style, shaped by years of experience.

Holt continued working with Foghat, and when the band began work on their 2016 studio album Under the Influence with producer Tom Hambridge, Holt was invited to be part of the writing and recording process, co-writing two songs and singing lead vocals and guitar on three tracks: “Upside of Lonely,” “Honey Do List,” and “All Because of You”.

Holt also played guitar on four additional tracks: “Under the Influence,” “She’s Got a Ring in His Nose,” “Made Up My Mind”, and “Hot Mama.”

In 2020, Holt played guitar on a release by “Hurricane” Ruth LaMaster, as well as on her follow-up “Live at Third & Lindsley” released in 2021.

In January, 2022, Foghat lead singer Charlie Huhn announced his retirement, Holt was invited to join the band and began touring with the band 2 weeks later. On November 10, 2023, Foghat released “Sonic Mojo” their 17th studio album.

Sonic Mojo” debuted at #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart and has remained on the charts for 28 weeks, as of this writing, making it one of the most successful debut Blues recordings of all time. Foghat continues to tour extensively and is currently recording a follow up recording to “Sonic Mojo”.

Scott Holt emphasizes the importance of creating music with integrity, viewing the artist not as the "source" but as a "conduit" for musical expression, which he considers an vital part of his physical and emotional self. (stated in an interview with Michael Limnios of Blues.Gr)

Equipment

edit

Scott has played many guitars over the years but his primary instrument is a Fender Stratocaster (referred to by Holt as #1) built by the Fender Custom Shop at the request of Buddy Guy. This is the guitar that Holt played during the majority of his tenure with Buddy Guy, most of his solo career and is currently playing with Foghat.

Other guitars include;

G&L ASAT

LSL Bad Bone 2 (custom guitar)

Scott uses amplifiers built by Tim O’Brien as well as Marshall amplifiers.
