Sangpuy Katatepan Mavaliyw(Chinese given name: Lú Jiē Xīng 盧皆興) is a Taiwanese singer-songwriter from the Mavaliyw family of the Katatepan clan of the Katratripulr tribe of the Puyuma of Taitung.[1] In 2021, he won two Golden Melody Awards for his album "pulu'em", including the Best Singer (Indigenous Language)[2] and Album of the Year Award.[3]
Biography edit
Sangpuy acquired a profound understanding of Puyuma culture during his youth, under the guidance of his uncle and older brother. In addition to this familial influence, he engaged directly with the tribe's elders, engaging in communication and study. This direct interaction not only facilitated his acquisition of the Puyuma language but also allowed him to master the intricate techniques involved in chanting tribal songs.[4][5]
In the sixth grade at Zhiben Elementary School, Sangpuy initiated his guitar practice under the guidance of his older brother. His musical journey continued during his time at Catholic St. Joseph Technical High School, where he not only composed songs but also represented the school in various singing competitions. Inspired by the linguistic prowess of his Amis peers, Sangpuy decided to enhance his proficiency in his native language. To achieve this, he sought instruction from Father John Baptist Tseng Chien-tsi, the local priest at Chihpen Immaculate Conception Church (later appointed as the Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Hualien). Sangpuy's dedication led to a triumph in a native language speech competition.[6] Subsequently, Sangpuy channeled his knowledge of the community's traditional culture by imparting the art of singing to the younger generation. Through song, the Puyuma community traditionally preserves and shares its unwritten history, a practice Sangpuy actively participated in to ensure the continuation of this rich cultural heritage.[4]
Following the 921 Earthquake, Sangpuy became involved with Abo Music (飛魚雲豹音樂工團) and collaborated on an album alongside Parangalan (胡德夫), Chu-hui Chen (陳主惠), and Chen Ming-Jen (陳明仁, the lead singer of the Northern Plains Bobcats 北原山貓).[7] They distributed the resulting CDs through street performances in Taipei, with the majority of the proceeds dedicated to providing assistance to his community members in need.[8][9]
