Sami Juhani Junnonen (born July 1, 1977)[citation needed] is a Finnish flutist from in Tampere.[1][2]
Junnonen received his professional training in classical music at the Sibelius Academy, the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Lyon, the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, and numerous master classes.[citation needed] He graduated with a Master's degree in music, with distinction, from the Sibelius Academy's Music Performance Programme in 2008. Junnonen gave his debut recital at the Helsinki Music Centre in 2012.[citation needed]
He has premiered several works by prominent contemporary composers, including Jimmy López, Judith Bingham, Cheryl Frances-Hoad, Uljas Pulkkis, and Jennah Vainio.[citation needed] Junnonen has performed as a soloist with orchestras such as the Houston Symphony[3], Ensemble du Monde, the Oltenia Philharmonia, and the Moldova National Symphony Orchestra. His concert tour in Russia in December 2017 was part of the global Suomi 100 project, commemorating Finland's centenary of independence.[citation needed]
Junnonen has served as the principal flutist in the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, the Cairo Symphony Orchestra in Egypt, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, the Royal Northern Sinfonia in Northern England, the Helsinki Chamber Orchestra, and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in New Zealand, where he also taught flute and chamber music at the University of Auckland.[citation needed] Additionally, he has taught orchestral playing at Fordham University in New York, USA.[citation needed]
Junnonen has recorded for Resonus Classics, Alba Records, and SibaRecords. His performances have also been recorded by Yleisradio, Radio Television Hong Kong, Radio New Zealand, and labels including Sony BMG, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Naxos, and Ondine.[citation needed] His recording of Mozart's flute quartets won the audience award for Yleisradio's "Record of the Year 2018".[4] Junnonen has received numerous prizes at international music competitions and has served as a juror in several of them.[citation needed]
