Sam Sugarman (born December 12, 1988) is an American musician, writer, and producer based in Los Angeles, California, best known for his work with Childish Gambino.

Sugarman was raised in Studio City, California and began playing guitar at the age of 9. He attended The New School of Jazz in Manhattan and The Oakwood School in North Hollywood, California.[1]

He joined Phases (band) (previously JJAMZ) on the road from 2012-2013 before the release of their first album Suicide Pact, subbing in for James Valentine who had new commitments to Maroon 5. [2]

Other artists Sugarman has worked and collaborated with include Justin Timberlake and Albert Hammond Jr. [3][4]

Sugarman wrote and recorded on Childish Gambino's "Have Some Love" along with Chris Hartz in 2015 for the album "Awaken, My Love!". [5] His first performances with Childish Gambino took place at Pharos on September 3 in Joshua Tree, California, nearly three months before the release of the album.[6][7] He resumed playing with Gambino for the "This is America" tour between 2018-2019.[8] Highlights included performances at Madison Square Garden, The Forum, Oracle Arena, O2 Arena and headlining slots at Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Splendour in The Grass, and Austin City Limits.[9] Sugarman contributed to the "3.15.20" album released March 15, 2020.[10] The album was updated and released as "Atavista" on May 13, 2024. Sugarman wrote and produced on the first single, "Little Foot Big Foot". [11][12]
