Ruidoso High School (RHS) is a traditional public high school in Ruidoso, New Mexico. As of 2024, the school is operated by the Ruidoso Municipal Schools.[1] It currently serves 532 students,[2] and the current principal is Angela Romero.[3]

History

Founded in 1956, Ruidoso is the sole high school in the village of around 7,000 residents.[4] When Dr. Jim Miller was founding Eastern New Mexico University, he initially held some classes within the high school, until 1994, when the campus officially had a campus building in Clovis.[5]

In 2023, there was controversy in the school after parents complained to the school board over the presence of LGBTQ+ books in the library.[6]

Academics

The NMPED measured the students at Ruidoso High School as having a 9% proficiency in mathematics, 29% in reading, and 32% in science, on par with other schools in the state.[2]

RHS also works in close conjunction with Eastern New Mexico University's branch in Ruidoso.

Athletics

RHS is represented by the Warriors.[8]

In American football, Ruidoso has a long history of success in the state. Their earliest victory was in Class C football in 1950, and has most recently won a AAA state title in 2022, as well as AAAA state titles in 2014 and 2017.[9] The current head coach of the team is Greg Crow, an alumni of the school's football program.[10]
