Royals is a British pop punk band from Southampton, United Kingdom that formed in 2019.

History

edit

Founding members Luke Smithson and Lewis Smyth had previously worked together in another pop punk group Gone by Tomorrow, until the group disbanded in 2018. Alex Baker had also worked with Smithson on other projects, before the three decided to form their own group. Will Sherlock was recruited soon after, and the four spent most of 2018 rehearsing.[1]

On February 8 2019, Royals officially launched as a band and released their first single "Up All Night", along with an accompanying music video. On April 26 2019, Royals released their first EP titled Painted Gold. The following year, the group released their second single from their upcoming EP "Out of Reach" on April 24 2020, and followed this up with the release of their third single "Fair-Weather Friend". [2] On July 22 2020, it was announced via the group's Facebook page that Smyth would be leaving the group.[3]

Following the departure of Smyth, Royals announced on November 2 2020 a new line-up on their Facebook and Instagram pages, and saw the arrival of Tom Guildford and Tom Trowbridge.[4]

Musical style and influences

edit

Royals' music style is heavily influenced by the pop punk genre, and draws comparisons to established bands such as All Time Low, State Champs, and Neck Deep.[5] The group are particularly lauded for their high-energy performances.[6]
