Roly Martin (born October 1955, in Villa Clara, Cuba) is a Cuban sports television anchor, reporter and radio broadcaster. He is the Spanish-language play-by-play announcer for the National Football League's Miami Dolphins. He was the Spanish-language play-by-play announcer for the Miami Hurricanes football team. During the week, he serves as a sports anchor for WJAN in Miami, Florida.
Education and early career[edit]
editMartin was born in Villa Clara, Cuba before moving to the United States at 12 years old. He attended Booker T Washington Senior High School and Miami High School. He later graduated from Florida International University's College of Communications.
Professional career[edit]
editFollowing his academic career, Martin accepted an associate producer position at Super Q FM-108 in Miami, Florida. By 1985, he was hired to be a sideline reporter for the Miami Dolphins Spanish radio broadcast. He eventually became the team's play-by-play announcer, a position that he has filled for over 30 years.
Prior to the 1995-1996 NHL Season, Martin was hired to be Florida Panthers Spanish radio play-by-play announcer, the team reached the Stanley Cup Finals that season. Martin also served as the radio play-by-play announcer for the Miami Hurricanes 2001 National Champion football team. . In addition, he has worked as a sportscaster for Telemundo 51.
Martin also hosted La Copa Dorada , a sports awards luncheon that honored the top Hispanic athletes in Miami-Dade County. He started hosting the event in 1988, some athletes featured included Alex Rodriguez, Mario Cristobal and Andres Galarraga.
