Road Waves is a Canadian jam band from Niagara Falls, Ontario in Canada. The band's current lineup is Ji Sharp, Dave Ruigruk, and Phil Bosley.
History
Niagara Falls based guitarist and vocalist, Ji Sharp, founded Road Waves in 2014, after having inspiration from his involvement in local cover bands and arts projects. Childhood friends and former bandmates, Yo Izumita, Lucas Punch, and Matt Maxwell were included in the roster. In December 2015, Road Waves became a trio, when Yo Izumita went on a hiatus. He returned during the summer of 2016, as the new bass player, after Punch departed the band. His return came with the addition of Don Letourneau, who joined as keyboardist until departing in 2020. 2017 marked the year of the bands first Canada wide tour and momentum continued to grow solidly till the pandemic stopped all touring from Spring 2020 until late Summer of 2021. Yo Izumita was replaced with Fearghas Gundy at the end of 2021 for two tours as a substitute bass player until Spring of 2022 when Dave Ruigrok joined the band as the present bass player. The end of the 2022 fall saw Matt Maxwell depart and Phillip Bosley took over as drummer.
The band’s first album, The Lighthouse, was released May 15th, 2015. Their sophomore effort, Red Sun Rising, was released May 11th, 2018. Since then several singles have been released as the band prepares it's third album. These songs includes the band's song, Frog Rock, that has been well received.
The band has toured heavily across Canada from 2017-2021 with almost 200 shows. After the lockdown, they have done 121 shows across the USA and Canada while growing the fan-base. Festivals include Burlington Sound of Music, Fredericton Harvest Music Festival, Indie Week, Canadian Music Week, Element Music Fest, Artswells Festival, Big Rock Music Fest, In The Soil Arts Fest, Folly Fest, 39 Days of July, Northern Vibes, and Livestock Niagara. They have, also, opened for David Wilcox, Sloan, 54-40, Toubab Krewe, Yak Attack, Five Alarm Funk, and My Son The Hurricane.
Road Waves has not gone unnoticed, with accolades such as 'Best New Group' and 'Best Jazz Group' at the 2016 Niagara Music Awards, culminating in a Diamond award in the 2020 Niagara Falls Readers Choice Awards. Their single ‘Frog Rock’ has earned a coveted spot on Spotify’s ‘Modern Jam Band’ editorial playlist.
