Razaq Obe is a Nigerian politician and engineer who has been serving as the Commissioner of Energy and Mineral Resources in Ondo State, Nigeria since 2017.[1] He was reappointed in 2021 by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, continuing his tenure in the administration.[2]
Early Life and Education
Razaq Obe was born on October 12, 1975, in Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State, Nigeria. He hails from the Obe family of Ifedore area of the state. Obe completed his primary education at St. Paul's Primary School, Akure, and his secondary education at St. Francis Secondary School, Akure. He then proceeded to the University of Benin, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Petroleum Engineering between 1998 to 2003 holds an MSc in Project Management (Oil & Gas) from the University of Liverpool, UK.[3]
Career
Before his political career, Obe worked as an engineer in various private companies, including Nigerian Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). He also founded and managed his own engineering firm, Obe Engineering Services. His career started at Nigerian Gas Company, Warri, (a subsidiary of NNPC Plc) through Globacom Ltd, to Exxon Mobil (Mobil Producing Nigeria), where he retired as Contract Manager in the Field Operations of the company after13 years of meritorious service. During his time at Exxon Mobil, he worked with professionals to provide acquisition, sourcing, and project management solutions to MPN-NNPC Joint Venture Operations (JVO). His team engaged in various activities including enhanced oil recovery, critical equipment overhauls, shut down operations, oil spill response, environmental remediation, and crude storage management. Engr. Razaq Obe held significant positions within ExxonMobil including being a member of the Board of ExxonMobil Nigeria Defined Benefit Pension and Employee Savings Funds worth circa N500B from 2017 to 2020. He served as Chairman of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), ExxonMobil Nigeria. Additionally, he was a member of the ministerial committee on the reform of contract staffing and outsourcing in the Nigerian oil and gas sector.[4] Additionally, Obe completed the Accredited Mediator program at the London School of Mediation in 2019.
Political Career
Obe began his political career in 2016 as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He served as the Special Adviser on Energy Matters to the Governor of Ondo State before his appointment as Commissioner of Energy and Mineral Resources in 2017. During his tenure, he has overseen various projects in the energy sector, including the development of the Ondo State Energy Policy and the establishment of the Ondo State Energy Commission. In 2022, Engr. Razaq Obe was appointed by the Federal Government as the Chairman of the Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO) in Ondo State. He is also the Chairman of the Ondo State Investment Summit known as Develop Ondo.[5]
Controversies
Obe was accused of denying payment to the governor's family for his appointment as commissioner. However, Obe dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated.[6]
