Radiology Calculator

edit

Radiology calculators are emerging tools in the field of radiology, facilitating accurate measurements and assessments in imaging studies. These calculators are gaining popularity to determine parameters such as organ volume, ACR RADS scoring, trauma grading, radiation dose, and more. Their primary purpose is to enhance diagnostic accuracy, streamline workflow, and improve patient care.

Clinical Applications

edit

American College of Radiology's Reporting and Data Systems

edit

The American College of Radiology (ACR) has developed various Reporting and Data Systems (RADS)[1] to ensure uniformity in imaging findings terminology, report structure, assessment criteria, and classification for patient imaging. These systems facilitate clearer communication, enhance diagnostic accuracy, and improve patient management.

BI-RADS® (Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System)

edit

The fifth edition of BI-RADS®, published in 2013[2][3], aims to standardize mammography, ultrasound, and MRI breast imaging reports. It provides a consistent framework for describing findings and assessing breast cancer risk. Currently, there are no publicly available BI-RADS® calculators.

Bone-RADS™ (Bone-Reporting and Data System)

edit

Bone-RADS™, updated in 2023[4], offers a standardized approach for evaluating potentially neoplastic bone lesions through radiography, CT, and MRI. It assigns scores based on radiographic features to predict malignancy risk and suggests appropriate management strategies. A free Bone-RADS™ calculator is currently available to the public[5].

C-RADS® (CT Colonography Reporting and Data System)

edit

C-RADS®, introduced in 2005[6] and updated in 2023[7], standardizes reporting of colorectal and extra-colonic findings in CT colonography. It categorizes lesions by morphology, size, number, and disease severity, aiding clinical communication and research. A free C-RADS® calculator is currently available [8].

LI-RADS® (Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System)

edit

LI-RADS® standardizes reporting for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in CT, MRI, US, and CEUS, aiming to reduce variability in imaging interpretation. It integrates with the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) guidelines. Multiple LI-RADS calculators are available to the public for diagnosis of HCC using CT and MRI findings[9][10]. A free and interactive calculator and report generator is also available for treatment response assessment (TRA) using 2024 LI-RADS® guidelines[11].

Lung-RADS® (Lung CT Screening Reporting and Data System)

edit

Lung-RADS®, last updated in 2022[12], ensures consistent reporting and management recommendations for lung cancer screening CTs. It aims to minimize confusion in interpretations and facilitate monitoring outcomes. A free calculator is available for Lung-RADS® v. 2022[13].

NI-RADS™ (Neck Imaging Reporting and Data System)

edit

Introduced in 2018[14], NI-RADS™ provides a standardized lexicon and risk stratification for interpreting surveillance imaging in patients treated for head and neck cancer. It helps guide management decisions based on imaging findings. A free NI-RADS calculator is available to the public[15].

O-RADS™ (Ovarian-Adnexal Reporting and Data System)

edit

O-RADS™ offers a standardized approach for describing and classifying ovarian and adnexal lesions, using ultrasound as the primary modality and MRI for higher specificity. It aims to optimize ovarian cancer outcomes while reducing unnecessary surgeries. Free O-RADS™ calculators are available for both MRI and ultrasound here [16][17][18][19]. An interactive report generator is also available in one of the aforementioned calculators [17].

PI-RADS® (Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System)

edit

PI-RADS®, developed through collaboration among ACR, AdMeTech Foundation, and ESUR, standardizes prostate MRI reporting to improve early diagnosis of clinically significant prostate cancer and reduce unnecessary procedures. PI-RADS® was updated to v. 2.1 in 2019[20]. Free PI-RADS® calculators are available to the public [21][22].

TI-RADS™ (Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System)

edit

Established in 2017[23], TI-RADS™ provides management guidelines and a standardized risk-stratification system for thyroid nodules identified via ultrasound. It helps determine which nodules warrant biopsy, aiming to reduce unnecessary interventions. Several free TI-RADS™ calculators are currently available [24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31].
