Radar the Happy Reindeer is a Canadian Christmas album released in 1975. After a terrible accident caused by Rudolf, Radar steps in to lead a team of new reindeers to save Christmas. The story is narrated by Canadian Ted Friend (1949-), who is also featured in the 2003 movie Elf as the news anchor near the end of the film.
Artists:
The album primarily features singers John Laughlin and Franz Russell. John Laughlin (1951-2023) was a Canadian folk singer who became popular after the release of "Morning Moon" in 1973. Franz Russell (1937-2008), also a Canadian, was most famous for being the voice over for popular commercials in the 1980s. "You can't top the Coppertop" was his memorable line from the Duracell commercials.
Track listing:
A1 | Radar Singers | We're A Merry Little Band | 2:52 |
A2 | John Laughlin and Radar Singers | Sing A Little Song For Christmas | 2:53 |
A3 | Franz Russell | It's Christmas Again | 2:35 |
A4 | Carolyne Field | Christmas Star | 2:57 |
B1 | John Laughlin and Franz Russell | Christmas Santa Special | 2:33 |
B2 | Radar Singers | Reindeer Whistle & Snort | 2:47 |
B3 | John Laughlin and Franz Russell | Santa's Very Near | 2:42 |
B4 | John Laughlin | Aurora Borealis | 2:27 |
Legacy:
The album remains a cult classic in Canada. The cover states "Watch for the Motion Picture of the Same Name." However, the movie has never been released. Fan theories suggest competition from the stop motion Rudolf sequels put an end to Radar's introduction on the big screen. As the 50th anniversary approaches to Radar's story, fans are still searching for answers to the unreleased motion picture.
