Writer-director Prasad Ingawale wrote Prem Mhanje kay Ast? as a "classic love story" and a "story of impossible love", based on his own experiences of Love at the stage of Collage student discrimination. He chose Satara and Ratnagiri Location, Satara District, Maharashtra as the setting. Over three years, Prasad worked on 30 drafts of the screenplay before "intuition took over as the muse". Prasad Ingawale said that the film is about "the challenges to choose the love, romance, but in a mainstream format." He had begun working on the story of Prem Mhanje Kay Ast in april 2017, After writing the script, he read it to his family and friends and saw how it "moved people". Prasad finished the script in December 2019. The dialogue was written by himself. Prasad Ingawale then editing it, he came across the story of Prem Mhanje Kay Ast ? He said that he wrote the script after much deliberation: He was right that that story on his experience in collage life. Prasad Ingawale decided to tell the story from woman perspective, since he was "fed up of the male-dominated culture and the films" with a "muscular hero saving the damsel in distress". He added "colour" to the character, imbibing good qualities of women in men." Several scenes, such as Daddu sitting on buffalo and singing song, were drawn from Prasad Ingawale's life. He called the film's title self-explanatory that might imply "Love and care, liberation and progressive ideas. According to Prasad Ingawale, the film's "takeaway" is that "lovers shouldn't be subjected to suicide." true lovers always stay waiting for Partners and accept the situation as it is.
