Peter L. Biro (born 1960) is the founder of Section 1,[1][2][3] a democracy and civics education think-tank in Toronto, Canada.[4][5][6] He is a lawyer,[7][3] educator, democracy scholar, writer, businessman, NGO, community leader.[8][9][10] He is the Editor of Constitutional Democracy Under Stress – A Time For Heroic Citizenship.[1][2][11] Biro is known principally for his scholarship and public interest advocacy to defend liberal constitutionalism.[12][13][14]

Biro was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1960.[1][15]

Education edit

Biro studied law at McGill University, where he obtained degrees in both the common law - L.L.B., and civil law - B.C.L., both in 1991.[16][17]

Career edit

Biro worked on a high-profile case to expose police corruption in the Central Field Command drug squad of the Toronto Police Service.[18][19][20][7] He advocated for democratic rights, including the right of sitting Members of Parliament to run for municipal office.[21][22][23]

In 2011, Biro became the CEO of Newcon Optik, a manufacturer and exporter of tactical electro-optics.[24][25] He was a board member of the University of Haifa, Jane Goodall Institute of Canada,[3] and the Jane Goodall Institute, Global,[26][27] RightBlue Labs Inc.[16] and West Toronto Services for Senior Citizens and the Disabled.[28]

He is the Editor of Constitutional Democracy Under Stress – A Time For Heroic Citizenship (Mosaic Press),[25][29] and The Notwithstanding Clause and the Canadian Charter: Rights, Reforms and Controversies.[22][16][11][30]

Democracy and Civics Education edit

In 2018, Biro founded Section 1, a democracy and civics education think-tank.[4][31][32] He is a keynote speaker.[3][2]

Music edit

In January 2022, Biro released the music video for his debut song, Just History Now.[33][10][34]. Biro has recorded and released two other singles, Real Thing[48] and Lullaby.[35][36][37]
