Peter Cabauy is an American physicist and entrepreneur known for his pioneering work in the development of long-life tritium-powered batteries and his contributions to quantum information physics. He is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of City Labs, Inc.

Early Life and Education

edit

Peter Cabauy was born and raised in Miami, Florida. He completed his undergraduate studies with a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Florida International University (FIU). He then pursued a Master of Science in Physics and a Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Physics at the University of Michigan. His doctoral research focused on quantum information physics, conducted in collaboration with Dr. Paul Benioff at Argonne National Laboratory..[1][2]

Career

edit

Florida International University

edit

In 2003, Cabauy founded and directed the Office of Entrepreneurial Science at Florida International University. In this role, he guided the development of the university’s technology incubator program and provided expertise on intellectual property and technology commercialization.[1][3]

City Labs, Inc.

edit

In 2005, Peter Cabauy co-founded City Labs, Inc., a company that specializes in the design and manufacture of NanoTritium™ batteries. These long-life batteries utilize tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen, to provide continuous power for microelectronic applications for 20+ years[4]. City Labs has developed an extensive product line, which serves various applications in the defense, aerospace, and medical sectors.[5]

Under Cabauy’s leadership, City Labs has built a strong portfolio of patents[6] and expanded its commercial reach into new markets, including medical implants[7] and space satellite technologies.[8][9]. Cabauy has also been awarded multiple Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants.[10]

Board Memberships and Academic Roles

edit

Beyond his entrepreneurial endeavors, Dr. Cabauy has contributed to the academic community. He served on the board of FIU’s University Research Foundation from 2013 to 2016, where he supported the advancement of research and innovation at the university. He has also been a visiting professor at Purdue University.[2]

Contributions and Impact

edit

Peter Cabauy’s work has significantly impacted the field of low-power, long-life energy solutions. His leadership at City Labs has resulted in the development of NanoTritium™ batteries, the world's first commercially available tritium battery [11]

Cabauy was a recipient of the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) fellowship in 2024, for his work on autonomous tritium micropowered sensors designed to detect water and other volatiles in permanently shadowed craters on the lunar south pole in support of future human settlements on the Moon.[12][13]
