Padma Shri Yellamma was an Indian social worker and educator who dedicated her life to empowering women and girls in rural India. She was born in a small village in Karnataka in 1927, and she came from a humble background. Despite her own lack of formal education, she was determined to make a difference in the lives of others. Yellamma began her work by teaching young girls in her village. She quickly realized that education was the key to empowering women and breaking the cycle of poverty. She started a small school in her own home, and she soon had more students than she could accommodate. In 1955, Yellamma founded the Yellamma Seva Sangh, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing education and vocational training to women and girls. The organization started with a single school, but it eventually grew to include a network of schools, colleges, and vocational training centres across Karnataka. Yellamma's work was not without its challenges. She faced opposition from traditionalists who believed that women should not be educated. She also struggled to find funding for her schools. But she never gave up. She was driven by a deep belief that education was the most powerful tool for change. Yellamma's work had a profound impact on the lives of thousands of women and girls. She helped them to gain the knowledge and skills they needed to become self-sufficient and to participate fully in society. She also instilled in them a sense of self-worth and a belief that they could achieve anything they set their minds to. Yellamma received numerous awards for her work, including the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian honour. She was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. But she was always more interested in making a difference in the lives of her students than in receiving recognition. Yellamma died in 2001, but her legacy lives on. The Yellamma Seva Sangh continues to provide education and vocational training to women and girls, and it has become one of the most respected non-profit organizations in India. Yellamma is remembered as a true champion of women's empowerment.
