Oz Noy edit

Oz Noy is an Israeli-American guitarist, composer, and session musician. Noy's playing incorporates a blend of jazz, funk, blues, rock, and fusion.[1]

In addition to leading his own band, Noy has in his career that spans over two decades worked with artists including Allman Brothers Band, Idina Menzel, Harry Belafonte, Toni Braxton, Gavin DeGraw, Chick Corea, Allen Toussaint, Steve Lukather, Mike Stern, Robben Ford, Eric Johnson, Paul Shaffer, Joe Bonamassa, and Dweezil Zappa.[2][3]

Early life and career edit

Born in Israel, Noy grew up in a city of Rishon Lezion, south of Tel Aviv. Influenced by the Beatles, Miki Shaviv, and his older brother, a bassist, he started playing guitar at the age of ten, even though he first considered picking up drums.[4][5] His professional career commenced at the age of 13[6]and by the time he was 24 Noy played with a number of famous Israeli musicians and performers. He also joined the house band of one of Israel’s television talk shows.[5][7][8]

In 1996 Noy immigrated to New York where he started establishing himself on the local scene. and since then performed and collaborated with Warren Haynes, John Patitucci, Keith Carlock, Anton Fig, Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl, Dennis Chambers, John Medeski, Greg Leisz, Will Lee, John Abercrombie, James Genus, and Reggie Washington.[4][1][9]

In 2003, Noy released his debut record Oz Live, which was recorded at New York City’s Bitter End.[10]The following year he signed with Magna Carta Records.[11] In 2005 Noy released his first studio album Ha! featuring Fig, Carlock, Lee, and Genus and with special guests Mike Stern and George Whitty.[12] Two years later Fuzzy[13] would come out, followed by Schizophrenic in 2009, Noy's fourth record.[4][14]

Noy signed with Abstract Logix in 2011. and has since released ten more albums in various band formations.[15]

Noy formed an R’n’B band named Ozone Squeeze[16] in 2017 and recorded two albums, Ozone Squeeze (2017) and Squeeze it (2023) with Rai Thistlethwayte, Darren Stanley, and Sara Niemietz.[17][18]

Noy performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival on July 14, 2018 in Rotterdam with Jimmy Haslip, Scott Kinsey, and Gary Husband.[19][20][21]

In 2022, Noy released an album of jazz standards titled Riverside with Ray Marchica and Ugonna Okegwo.[22]

Noy won the Guitar Player magazine readers' poll for “Best guitar riff on a record” (2007), “Best new talent” (2008), and “Best out there guitar player” (2013).[23][24]

Noy also conducts periodic master classes at The Collective School of Music in New York City,[25] Musicians Institute in Los Angeles.[26] and Berklee School of Music in Boston.[27]
