Outlaws of Thunder Junction is the 100th expansion set for Magic: The Gathering and is not part of a block. It was released on April 19, 2024.[1][2]

Setting

edit

The new plane of Thunder Junction, and the set based around it, is an American Wild West-inspired frontier world. The plane contained no sapient life until the beginning of the Omenpath Arc. The set's story sees villains from across the Multiverse, who have traveled through Thunder Junction, fighting for a lost treasure. Oko, a fae plansewalker, has formed a gang with the Multiverse's most wanted (a.o. Tinybones, Vraska, Rakdos and Annie Flash) to pull off a heist of epic scale.

Gameplay

edit

The set introduces a couple of new mechanics and new terms:[3]

  • Spree is a new keyword ability that introduces modality. Spree cards have multiple modes. When casting such a spell, the player must choose one or more modes that should be activated. No single mode can be chosen more than once. Each mode has its own cost.
  • Saddle is a new keyword ability that appears only on cards with the new Mount creature type. Saddle is activated as a sorcery and is similar to the Crew ability introduced in Kaladesh. To activate Saddle X, a player has to tap any number of their own untapped creatures (other than the Mount itself) with total power X or more. From then on the creature is saddled, which doesn't inherently mean anything, but other abilities can refer to the Mount being saddled.
  • Plot allows a player to pay a cost up front and exile a card from their hand. The card is then plotted and can be casted on a future turn without paying its mana cost. Both, the plotting of a card and the casting of a plotted card, are done as a sorcery.
  • Outlaw is a new term and defined as any permanent with at least one of the following creature types: Assassin, Mercenary, Pirate, Rogue and Warlock.
  • A "crime is committed" whenever a player casts a spell, activates an ability or puts a triggered ability on the stack that targets at least one of the following: an opponent, a spell or ability controlled by an opponent, a permanent controlled by an opponent or a card in an opponent's graveyard.
