Old Street is an ancient trackway in the historic county of Berkshire in the south of England.[1] The precise ancient route of Old Street is not known, but it would have been one of a number of ox droves leading to The Ridgeway.[2] These droves were routes for drovers to drive their oxen on foot from one place to another, such as to winter or summer grazing, or to market. Old Street is characterised by having numerous connecting tracks and roads.[2]
The modern route of the trackway takes numerous public rights of way and metalled roads. It runs from the west of Scutchamer Knob, and ends 8.5 miles (13.68 km) south east, at Priors Court Road in Hermitage. The route is cut off by the M4 motorway near Priorscourt Farm, and also deviates around Beedon Common.[1]
