Not a Jealous Bone is a 1987 short film created by Cecelia Condit, succeeding Possibly in Michigan. It follows an older woman's journey searching for her mother. It explores themes of aging, frailty, and mortality.

In 1990, the film was broadcasted on PBS in Ohio, and in 2016, it was shown at Centre des arts actuels Skol in Montreal, along with her 2015 film Pulling Up Roots. [1]

Condit considers it to be part of the "Jill Sands trilogy", which refers to three of her films which star the actress Jill Sands; Beneath the Skin, Possibly in Michigan, and Not a Jealous Bone.[2]

The film can be found on Condit's personal YouTube channel.

Plot

edit

The movie begins on a beach with Sophie looking upon younger people with jealousy. She finds the wishbone which promises immortality and goes to find her mother to share it with her. She explores various different settings and does not find her mother, and it is implied that she died.

An unnamed younger woman who does not want to grow old like Sophie wants the bone for herself, and tries to steal it. After they fight over it, Sophie hits the woman with the bone, causing her to lay unconscious on the ground.

Finally, Sophie is seen dancing with the bone with a song's vocals including "I may be old but you're dead", and "you are dead but I am still alive".

Reception

edit

Stigma around aging - especially for women - was commented on.[3] It has also been described as 'biblical'.[4]
