Draft:Northern Pacific Class A

  • Comment: One source is a SELFPUB, one is the most passing of passing references. Just because locomotive classes are generally notable doesn't mean they always are—the lack of sourcing suggests this is one such case. Pbritti (talk) 05:32, 27 November 2023 (UTC)

The Northern Pacific Class A was a class of 12 4-8-4 "Northern" type steam locomotives that were built by ALCO's Schenectady Works for the Northern Pacific Railway in 1926.[1][2]

History edit

In the 1900s, the Northern Pacific Railway needed an all new steam locomotive for their usage on their system, so ALCO had approached their own Schenectady Locomotive Works where they had drew up plans for a 4-8-4 "Northern" type steam locomotive for the Northern Pacific Railway, this resulted in the creation of the Northern Pacific Class A.[1][2]

These locomotives were constructed in 1926 and a total of twelve examples of these 4-8-4 "Northern" steam locomotives were ever constructed by ALCO's Schenectady Works, and all sixteen examples were delivered to the Northern Pacific Railway that same year in 1926.[1]

Withdrawal of the class had occurred between 1949–1959, and the last example was out of service and all twelve examples were cut up for scrap, thus rendering them extinct.[1]
