National Association of Indigenous Institutes of Higher Learning (NAIIHL), along with First Nation Adult and Higher Education Consortium run the[1] first of its kind university, owned and operated by Canada's First Nations. Established in 2015, the university is located in St. Paul, Alberta.
History of Blue Quills University
editNAIIHL member Blue Quills University (UnBQ) was born out of the 1970s transformation of Indian Residential Schools, in Canada. A former Indian Residential School, 'The Blue Quills' was transferred to the native community in 1970,[2] as part of a push to end the forced religious education and assimilation of Canadian First Nations communities' children.
Canada First Nations Owned Institutions of Higher Learning
editNAIIHL and First Nations Adult and Higher Education Consortium (FNAHEC) cater to UnBQ and other native owned universities and colleges in Canada. The collaboration aims to increase First Nations' ownership of higher learning institutions. Research institutions and document archival programs owned or operated through the collaboration include Yellowhead Tribal College and Maskwacis Cultural College.
