NEAR Protocol[1] (commonly referred to as just NEAR) is a decentralized application platform running on its own blockchain using a proof-of-stake mechanism to provide smart contract functionality. NEAR is the native cryptocurrency of the platform.
Initially, NEAR was a machine learning platform named near.ai. Illia Polosukhin and Alexander Skidanov founded the NEAR Protocol in 2017. NEAR Protocol was able to raise $21.6 million[2] from A16Z during it's mainnet launch in 2020, even before they built anything. Within a few days of the launch, the team had grown to ten members.[citation needed]
As of 2023, NEAR's total market cap is roughly $2 billion. The highest token price for NEAR Protocol (NEAR) cryptocurrency is $20.42[3], which was recorded on January 16, 2022.
History edit
NEAR Protocol is a layer 1 blockchain that initially started out as a machine learning project by Illia Polosukhin and Alexander Skidanov founded in 2017.[4] NEAR uses Proof of Stake (PoS) to provide for smart contract functionality and utilizing a sharding (formally called Nightshade in NEAR's platform) to try and facilitate mass adaptation; additionally, NEAR uses Rainbow Bridge to allow users to transfer tokens from the NEAR ecosystem to the Ethereum Network.[5] In 2020, after its first genesis node was released, NEAR has been working on its infrastructure.[citation needed]
In 2021 the artist Deadmau5 partnered with NEAR to release an NFT collection[6] as well as former NBA basketball player (Baron Davis) releasing his own platform based on NFT's which utilizes NEAR Protocol. [7] In 2022, NEAR Foundation raised $150 million in venture capital[8] and in 2023 it released a new paradigm to blockchain technology, Blockchain Operating System (BOS).[9]
