Lorne Balfe composed the musical score for the series

The music of the American fantasy television series The Wheel of Time is composed by Lorne Balfe. The Amazon Prime Video series is based on the novel series of the same name by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson.

Background and development edit

The music discussions went on for a year with Balfe and Judkins interacted through Zoom calls. Lorne Balfe described the score as "a big hot pot of different styles" such as Balinese, Celtic, Southern, and Cajun, although Judkins did not wanted it to be cliché; Balfe further insisted not to be in the lines of traditional medieval folk music and wanted to give modern touches, as well as being "epic and orchestral", similar to The Lord of the Rings film series.[1] Balfe felt that he was assigned to create a musical world and themes for individual characters, before scoring to a picture, as it was massive and immersive.

Composing for the series began in London, while he was simultaneously scoring for Black Widow and Rumble. In incorporating the fictional language "Old Tongue", he worked with dialect and language coaches to ensure that the lyrics were grammatically correct and had them written out phonetically for singers. The vocals were considered to move the scenes' narrative supporting the storyline as well as the character development.[2]

Balfe curated temp tracks for each characters with him "spending days or weeks just trying to immerse himself into that character" and write keywords about the characteristics before writing their themes to find the sonic identity. Apart from writing themes for characters, Balfe further researched on several instruments, such as the carnyx, a Roman instrument that was mixed with modern technology to bring hybrid sounds and further used banjos and sitars in a single musical piece, which were not heard often.[1]

Since the scoring was done remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, plans for performing an 80-piece orchestra was interrupted. However, Balfe used several experimentation techniques to create more hybrid sounds of different patterns. The score was recorded in several places such as Bali, Italy, Spain and Tennessee in and around 2021.

Albums edit

The first season spawned three volumes of soundtrack albums,[4] along with an additional album "The First Turn" released a week before the series' premiere on November 12, 2021.[3] The album contained largely conceptual themes that integrated key themes that spawned multiple variations in the final score. Balfe described as the re-imagination of the fantasy music, that does away with the reliance of the traditional orchestral score in favor of modern colors, while retaining strong melodies that would be integral to the episodic themes.[3] The soundtracks, were published by Milan Records for digital and physical release on November 19, December 3 and 17, respectively.[5][6][7]

The soundtrack for the second season, would be released in the similar pattern. The first two volumes were released on September 8 and 22.[8][9]

Reception edit

James Southall of Movie Wave wrote "It is essential to approach The Wheel of Time with an open mind – it is far from what you would expect of the music for an epic fantasy, either in an historical sense or more modern examples. For me though it’s really quite impressive what Lorne Balfe has conjured up – it’s a sound that very much works in the context of the show and also one I’ve found has become quite compelling on these albums."[12] Calling it as "intimidating and epic" Emma Ayars of Collider summarised "the soundtrack at times flattens the show’s extensive lore. It serves its purpose in the series and the vocals are impressive, but it ranks lowest on the list for its lack of diversity in its musical choices."[13]
