Location edit

The Museum of Ceramics "Giuseppe Gianetti" is located in Saronno, a little town near Varese, in Lombardy.

History edit

The museum of Ceramics Giuseppe Gianetti.[1] opened in 1994 in the centre of Saronno.

The villa where the museum is located, was built in 1930s and the sisters of Nina Biffi[2], Giannetti's wife, used to live there.

The historical villa preserves its original flooring, parquet, marble features, staircases, window fixtures, furnishings, paintings, mirrors, Murano glass chandeliers, bathrooms complete with their respective fittings, and even retains the original light switches.

Noteworthy is the handrail of the staircase leading to the Museum's second floor, which was meticulously crafted following a design conceptualised by Carla Biffi, one of Nina Biffi's sisters.

Giannetti's relatives, who owned the building from 1936, decided to donate both the villa and the collection in 1994, after a long and precise classification of all pieces, to Fondazione COE for the Museum to be built.

Collection edit

The museum's display is categorised into three distinct collections. [3]

First Collection edit

The first and largest collection contains approximately 200 pieces of porcelain, produced from the 1720s to the early decades of the 18th century in Meissen, Germany.

Second Collection edit

The second collection contains various Italian, European, and oriental porcelains. Stand out among the Italian manufacturing, noteworthy ones include Hewelcke, Vezzi, Ginori, and Capodimonte. From Vienna, Ludwigsburg, Kloster Veilsdorf, Zurich, Saint Cloud, Chantilly, Mennecy, Vincennes-Sèvres, Tournai, and Chelsea, there are 65 pieces regarding European manufacturing. Alternately, the oriental section consists of 33 Chinese and Japanese pieces created by the East India Company specifically for the Western market.

Third Collection edit

The third section, dedicated to 18th-century Italian and European maiolica, compromises the primary nucleus of approximately 230 Milan's pieces

Ceramics Festival edit

From June 23rd to June 25th 2023, the third edition of the Ceramics Festival took place in Saronno, and the museum organized the event with the assistance of the municipality.
