The murder of Vyleen White occurred on February 3, 2024, at the Redbank Town shopping centre in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia.[1] Vyleen White, a 62-year-old grandmother, was fatally stabbed.[2] The incident garnered significant media attention, partly due to the subsequent arrest of a 16-year-old boy in connection with the crime.[3][4]. The murder lead to racial tension and condemnation from the local South Sudanese community.[5]
Incident
editOn February 3, 2024, Vyleen White was shopping with her granddaughter at the Town Square Redbank Plains shopping centre. She was allegedly stabbed in the chest in the centre's car park and died from her injuries shortly thereafter. The incident was witnessed by several bystanders and resulted in considerable alarm in the local community.
Aftermath and Legal Proceedings
editFollowing the incident, a 16-year-old boy was arrested and charged with murder, where the case incited discussion on youth violence and public safety. Community organized fundraisers to support White's family and to highlight her legacy were also created in response.

editThe murder prompted a wide response in Ipswich community. Vigils were organized, and the community provided support for White's family.
