The Movement Crew (무브먼트)[1] is a Korean hip hop collective formed in Seoul, South Korea in 2000. The group was led by Tiger JK with members Yoon Mirae, Eun Jiwon, Epik High, Dynamic Duo, Leessang, YDG, Bizzy, Dok2, Double K, and more.[2]

The origin of The Movement Crew dates back to Drunken Tiger's 2nd album labeled The Movement (2000), consisting of its participating members CB Mass and Uptown. The collective rapidly recruited new members like Eun Jiwon, Epik High, and Leessang, becoming one of South Korea's largest hip hop crews in the 2000.[3] The crew attained various other artists and affiliates in support of the controversial hip hop movement at the time. The official member lineup consists of the featured artists labeled on their Movement Concert promotional ads and The Movement Series albums.

History edit

2000–2006: Formation edit

In the late 90s, South Korea faced its hip hop revolution, with artists like Drunken Tiger facing backlash for their controversial sound and image.[4][5] Tiger JK headed The Movement in retaliation with other hip hop artists emerging at the time.

2006–2013: Nationwide recognization edit

By 2006, hip hop was gaining rapid popularity with The Movement becoming massively popular. The main members began to appear on mainstream television in the so-called "hip hop special" or "the Movement special" on various variety and music programs.[6]

2013: Conflict and disbandment edit

By 2013, rumors of conflict within the collective began to arise, specifically surrounding Epik High and their position in the crew, after a diss song mentioning Double K was released. Similarly, a diss track battle broke out between E-Sens and Gaeko, adding to the controversy over group relations.[7][8]

In late 2013, Tablo stated in an interview that nobody knew what direction the movement was taking, implying a division between members.[7] Finally, in December 2013, the founder, Tiger JK announced on Twitter "The Movement is just a symbolic name to expand the (hip hop) culture, not a management company or crew concept. Everyone is the leader of the movement." Fans of the collective considered this to be the official disbandment of the crew.[9]

However, in present times, the members of the movement continue to collaborate, unaffiliated with The Movement Crew name.[10]

Discography edit

The Movement edit

In 2000, Tiger JK released The Great Rebirth, featuring a track called "The Movement", marking the starting point of The Movement Crew. Kim Jin Pyo, Yoon Mirae, CB Mass, and Uptown participated in the song.[11]

The Movement II edit

'The Movement II" released in CB Mass' first album titled Massmediah. The song samples Aerosmith's "Dream On".[12][13]

The Movement III edit

"The Movement III" released in 2001, on CB Mass' second album, Massmatics. The song was performed live later at The Movement Concert in 2006. The concert version features adjusted lyrics to accommodate new members.[14][15]

The Movement IV edit

In 2008, the final iteration of the Movement Series was released under Bizzy in an EP called Bizzionary. The album includes a music video featuring all The Movement Crew members singing the song live.[16] Yoon Mirae is the only member that does not appear in the video after giving birth to her and Tiger JK's baby, Jordan, who is mentioned in the video.
