Expressway "Montana - Botevgrad", part of the I-1 road (E79), is a project for the construction of a new expressway and the extension of existing sections of the Republican road I-1 in Northern Bulgaria.

The expressway is a continuation of the Vidin - Montana highway in the direction of the Hemus highway at the beginning of the bypass of the city of Montana. Upon completion, it will connect the cities of Montana, Vratsa, Mezdra and Botevgrad. The road is realized by extending the existing national road I-1 and the European road E79 will pass along it. It is part of the Pan-European Corridor IV.

The total planned length of the "Montana - Botevgrad" expressway is about 97.9 km

Planning of the road between Montana and Botevgrad

The purpose of the project is the construction of a new road route or the modernization of the existing one on the six sections: bypass road of the city of Montana, Montana - Vratsa, bypass road of the city of Vratsa, Vratsa - Mezdra, Mezdra - Lyutidol and Lyutidol - Botevgrad (and connection with the Hemus highway ) with a total length of about 98 km and maximum speed of 120 km/h.

Mezdra - Botevgrad

Section 1 – Bypass of the city of Montana (connection with Vidin - Montana highway)

At a road junction at 98 km, a connection is made with the existing I-1 road and a bypass road of the city of Montana

Section 2 – Road I-1 Montana – Vratsa from km 111+305 to km 140+008

The beginning and the end of the project section are tied respectively to the end of the constructed road in the town of Montana and to the beginning of a bypass road in the town of Vratsa
Maximum speed V=120 km/h are planned for this section.
Road junctions: Two road junctions and two direct connections on two levels are provided for connections with the road network.
On August 1, 2024, a contract was signed with "Transgeo" EOOD to complete the section

Section 4 - Vratsa - Mezdra

Montana - Mezdra

The road between Mezdra and Botevgrad will be two-lane with two traffic lanes in each direction. The route will follow the existing road which will be widened and reconstructed. It is planned to build a bypass road in the village of Lyutidol, which will take the heavy traffic out of the settlement.

Section 5 - Mezdra - Lutidol

Two tunnels, 490 m and 340 m long, will be built on the bypass of Lyutidol village.

Section 6 - Lutidol - Botevgrad (connection with Hemus highway)

The road will bypass the villages of Lyutidol, Tipchenitsa, Novachene and Skravena. A number of facilities will be built and repaired - bridges over Iskar River, Malata Reka, Kalnitsa, Bebresh, Rudarka, as well as a road junction near the village of Novachene.

Construction

On December 29, 2015, Montana bypass was completed and put into operation.
Sections between Mezdra - Lutidol and Lutidol - Botevgrad are under construction since 2019 and are expected to be completed in 2025.
