editMonkey Barrel Comedy operates as a year-round venue, with shows taking place seven nights a week across three permanent performance spaces. This includes comedy tours, works-in-progress, and regular shows featuring a combination of local, national, and international acts. Programming includes stand-up, improvisational, and alternative comedy.[2]
Edinburgh Fringe Festival
editMonkey Barrel Comedy has been operating at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe since 2016[3]. In addition to its three year-round performance spaces, the club regularly runs shows in a number of other spaces in Edinburgh City Centre throughout August. In 2022, Monkey Barrel Comedy hosted the winners of both 'Best Show' (Sam Campbell) and 'Best Newcomer' (Lara Ricote) at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards,[4] as well as 'Best Show' again in 2023 (Ahir Shah)[5], and both 'Best Newcomer' (Joe Kent-Walters) and 'Best Show' (Amy Gledhill) in 2024[6]. The club has been described as the "beating heart" of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe by The Telegraph[7]. In 2024, the club partnered with the Edinburgh International Film Festival[8] to jointly operate one of the newly-relaunched festival's venues, InSpace, at the University of Edinburgh.
Recognition
editMonkey Barrel Comedy was named 'Scotland's Best Comedy Venue' at the Chortle Awards in 2023 and 2024.[9][10]
