Introduction edit
Monashee Spirits Distillery (pronounced "Moe-nuh-shee", with the stress on the first syllable; the name is inspired by the Monashee Mountains Range surrounding the community its nestled in, meaning "mountain of peace" in Gaelic) is a craft distillery located in Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada, known for producing artisanal spirits.
The distillery is owned by Josh McLafferty and has made a significant mark in the craft spirits industry since its inception in 2016. Monashee Spirits is renowned for its Ethos Gin, which won the Best in Class Gin at the Canadian Artisan Spirit Competition in 2019[1] along with winning the Canadian Artisan Spirit of Canada Award the same year. The distillery emphasizes using locally sourced and organic ingredients, particularly certified organic triticale from Fieldstone Organics in Armstrong, BC Canada.
History edit
Monashee Spirits Distillery sources its water from Greeley Creek[2], a pristine natural water source renowned for its purity and contribution to the distillery's unique spirit profiles. The grains used in production are exclusively 100% British Columbia grown, with triticale sourced from Fieldstone Organics and malted barley from Gambrinus Malt House, both located in Armstrong BC Canada and emphasizing the distillery's commitment to local agriculture and quality.
The distillation process at Monashee Spirits is carried out using a variety of stills: a 2000L stripping still, a 600L hybrid column still, and a 200L gin still, which are instrumental in crafting their distinct spirits. This setup allows for a versatile range of products, each with its own unique character.
Monashee Spirits Distillery employs a diverse array of cask styles for aging their spirits, including new American oak, Canadian oak, as well as previously used bourbon, rye, sherry, and rum casks. This variety in cask usage imparts a wide range of flavours and complexities to their spirits, setting them apart in the craft distillery scene.
All aspects of production - fermenting, distilling, bottling, and aging - are carried out on-site at their sole location. This hands-on approach ensures that every bottle of Monashee Spirits embodies the essence and high standards of the distillery, reflecting their dedication to crafting exceptional spirits. The integration of all these processes at one location not only highlights their commitment to quality but also demonstrates their role as a prominent player in the craft distilling industry in Canada.
