Miss S (Chinese: 旗袍美探; pinyin: Qípáo měi tàn: literally "Cheongsam Beauty Detective".[1]) is a 2020 Mandarin-language detective television series based on the Australian series Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, which in turn was based on the Phryne Fisher novels by Kerry Greenwood.
The series was commissioned as an HBO Asia Original, and was made available in China via Tencent Media and Beijing TV. Outside of China it was distributed by HBO and WarnerBrothers/Discovery's other distribution partners.
Although the stories of the series are based on individual stories of the source material, the setting of the drama is 1930s Shanghai. The 30-part series largely consisted of 2-part stories, each of which had a 50 minute runtime.

Synopsis edit

Su Wenli is a wealthy socialite who returns to Shanghai from Paris in the 1930s. She becomes involved in murder investigations connected to people in her circle, and establishes a Detective Agency. She often works alongside local police inspector Luo Qiuheng, who values her contributions but also bristles at the irregularity of her involvement.

Reception edit

The series has an average IMDb score of 7.0. Anthony Morris, writing for SBS, noted that "While Ma Yili’s performance is maybe a little more arch than Essie Davis’ work in the original, she has plenty of flirty charm while still having enough backbone to be believable as a professional private eye", but that in comparison to the source work, "this version tones down the more overt sexiness somewhat"[2]
