Michael William Fitzgerald (born 1956) is an American historian, professor, and author. He is a professor of history at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. His scholarly focus is on African-American history, the American Civil War-era, civil rights, and related topics.

Biography edit

Fitgzgerald attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he earned a B.A. degree in history in 1977; followed by a M.A. degree in history, 1981; and a Ph.D. in history in 1986.[1][2] He is married to historian and professor Judy Kutulas,[3] and they have two sons.

His book on Alabama during the Reconstruction era, Reconstruction in Alabama: From Civil War to Redemption in the Cotton South (2017) revisits and updates Walter Lynwood Fleming's book Civil War and Reconstruction in Alabama (1905). Reconstruction in Alabama: From Civil War to Redemption in the Cotton South (2017) won the Jules and Frances Landry Award.[4]
