Michael Kollwitz is an American musician known for playing the Chapman Stick. In 1976, after meeting the instrument's inventor, Emmett Chapman, Kollwitz became a longtime protégé and friend.[1]
Kollwitz transitioned from the telecommunications industry to a full-time career performing with the Chapman Stick in 2003. His music has been influenced by keyboardists Keith Emerson, Chick Corea, and Herbie Hancock as well as guitarists Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Eric Johnson (guitarist). In 2017, he released his Serenity trilogy of albums, with Serenity III reaching #2 on the Billboard New Age Chart.[2] Kollwitz has played live at various events, both public and private, and has released over 30 recordings. He has also incorporated his music into presentations as a keynote speaker.[3]
In 2023, in addition to releasing his 25th audio CD Best of Serenity,[4] Kollwitz published his book Stick With It: Adventures of a Chapman Stick Player, chronicling the early days of The Stick, buying his first Stick & learning to play it, and his relationship with Emmett Chapman.[5]
