Biography

edit

Maya Lewandowsky, a multidisciplinary tour de force, is the artistic director and founder of La Caravan Dance Theatre[2] and the creator of the newfangled Free Your Natural Voice Method[3]. With over three decades of professional experience. Maya has made a name for herself as a visionary artist and leader in the performing arts world.[4] She is responsible for numerous full-length, dramatically experimental, multidisciplinary works that have been received with great acclaim[5]. She’s trained and led artistic teams in crafting unique creations, bringing out the best in artists and collaborators into a truly owned avant-garde work.[6] Maya Lewandowsky, a true pioneer, and master of the performing arts has devoted her life to the pursuit of artistic excellence and innovation. With an unwavering passion for her craft, Maya has spent over 45 years honing her skills and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in dance, theater, and voice. Her first amateur performance was at the age of three. She was often called a prodigy because of her ability to interpret mature and difficult subject matter while easily engaging and inviting audiences into the world of interpretive dance.[7] She’s a rare talent who was trained as an international ballet dancer but also used other arts forms such as puppetry, theatre acting and mask work which was unusual for a ballet dancer in the 70’s and 80’s. Throughout her career, Maya has had the privilege of studying and performing with some of the most esteemed teachers and companies in the world, including Martha Graham, Lar Lubovitch, Tedd Robinson, Gigi Căciuleanu , Luciano Cannito, Inbal Pinto & Avshalom Pollak, and the Bat-Dor Dance Company, eventually becoming a soloist herself. She has graced stages in Europe, North America, and Asia, gaining a reputation for her daring, experimental, and emotionally resonant performances. Maya holds an advanced diploma from the Royal Academy of Dance in London and spent 5 years studying classical opera singing and contemporary vocal techniques with the Tel-Aviv University faculty. Maya moved to Canada in 2002, where she founded La Caravan Dance Theatre. In 2019, she moved to Paris, France to continue her in-depth exploration of dance, voice, ritual theatre, meditation, and interactive media with Pantheatre, Carolyn Carlson and many others. Maya has worked for the School of Alberta Ballet, the University of CalgaryDance Faculty, and the Epcor Centre for the Arts. She has received numerous awards and scholarships[8] in recognition of her extraordinary talent and dedication. Her unwavering commitment to excellence, innovation, and artistic exploration is a testament to her lifelong love of the arts and the profound impact they have had on her life and the life of others. Maya's work and legacy continue to inspire and shape the world of the performing arts, and her contributions will echo for years to come.[9] In addition to her professional achievements, Maya has also pursued a deep and meaningful connection to her spiritual practice. Working closely with meditation masters Doug Duncan and Catherine Pawasarat of Planet Dharma since 2007, Maya has integrated her artistic and spiritual pursuits in a way that has enriched and deepened her work and her vision of what it means to be an integrated and well-rounded performance artist. With a passion that only continues to grow, Maya Lewandowsky remains at the forefront of the contemporary dance world by transcending labels, limits, and genres. She continuously inspires and empowers others to explore the depths of their own creative potential.
