Marla Mindelle is an American actress. She is best known for co-creating the musical, Titanque, and originating its lead role - a parody of Celine Dion.
Early Life edit
Mindelle was born on December 22nd, 1984 in Yardley, Pennsylvania. Her father was a composer and her parents met doing regional theater.[1] She attended Pennsbury High School where she graduated in 2002.
Mindelle credits her parents for her introduction to theater, saying “My parents were always playing musical theater records. I remember listening to shows like ‘Evita,’ ‘Zorba’ and others and absolutely falling in love with them. Later, one of the things I remember most was when my parents took me to New York to see Broadway shows.
With all that, I quickly became acclimated to the Broadway lifestyle, and so in love with it all, in fact, that everybody who knew me realized that someday I was going to go off and try my own hand at show business."
She went on to study at Cinncinnati College Conservatory of Music and graduated in 2006[2]
Theater Career edit
Mindelle states she signed with an agency about 2 to 3 weeks after her conservatory concert where agents were invited to view graduating students. She auditioned for a year before landing the role of Kitty in The Drowsy Chaperone at the Philadelphia Academy of Music[2]in 2007. This lead to her first North American tour in the same role.[3]
She made her Broadway debut in 2010 joining the ensemble of the Lincoln Center revival of South Pacific. In 2011, she originated the role of Sister Mary Robert in Sister Act: The Musical.[4] In 2013, she originated the role of stepsister Gabrielle in the re-imagined revival of Cinderella by Douglas Carter Beane.[5]
In 2017, Mindelle teamed up with book writers Tye Blue and Constantine Rousouli, and music supervisor Nicholas Connell to create Titanique, a musical parody of the 1997 movie Titanic set to the songs of Celine Dion[6]. Mindelle played the lead role, a parody of Dion. The show premiered in Los Angeles in 2017. It began an off-Broadway run at The Asylum Theatre in June 2022, transferring to the Daryl Roth Theatre in November. The production won the 2023 Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Musical and for lead performer (Mindelle) and costume design (Alejo Vietti). Mindelle left the show in the summer of 2023 and was replaced by Nicole Parker.
