Marine Lake is a man-made lake located in Southport. It was constructed in the 19th century, to provide a safe area to boats and ships during low tides.
History
editUntil the lake's construction, the tide of the Irish Sea used to come up to the promenade. The foreshore was purchased by the Southport Corporation in 1885. A lake and park, named South Marine Gardens, was built south west of the pier in 1887, and the North Marine Gardens was built in 1892. These two lakes were joined on the 17th September 1895, creating the Marine Lake we know today.
Leisure
editThere are lots of leisure areas on the Marine. Boats, water bikes and ferries are just a few of the attractions available. There are also plans for a water and light show and a new convention center.
Water and Light Show
editThere is a planned Water and Light Show[1] on the Marine Lake. This uses £3.9 million of the town deal.
Marine Lake Events Centre
editA new convention centre and theatre is being built on the site on the old Floral Hall site. It uses £73 million[2] and is hoping to bring in an economy and tourism boost to Southport.
